Making it a university of choice-Mazibuko

Unizulu Vice-chancellor Prof Mazibuko welcomes students

THE University of Zululand Vice-Chancellor Prof Fikile Mazibuko addressed thousands of new and old students, during the institution’s opening ceremony at Bhekuzulu Hall on Thursday.

The construction of modern infrastructure, appointment of staff at appropriate levels with relevant skills and competencies were among issues highlighted during the ‘State of the University’ address.

‘We will continue to produce globally competitive graduates, relevant for the human capital needs of the country, by providing quality education which upholds high standards of research and academic excellence.

‘Unizul has begun a major facelift with a R550 million refurbishment of its current facilities and the establishment of a state-of-the-art infrastructure at its KwaDlangezwa Campus.

‘The project will bring about significant transformation and renewal of the academic enterprise and physical infrastructure. It is also in line with national imperatives, the higher education framework and our vision to refocus Unizulu as a South African Comprehensive University of excellence and quality.

‘It is also aimed at catering for the needs of students with disabilities. The underlying principles of the project will place emphasis on academia and heighten the student experience.

‘The university’s ability to deliver relevant and quality services to students and staff will also be strengthened,’ said Mzibuko.

Mazibuko thanked the university staff for their dedication and commitment and for providing high quality education.

She added that the vision to make their institution a university of choice, developing a more effective internal and external communication strategy and culture with the lack of financial sustainability, remained a challenge.
