Crime crackdown pays off

Police recovered two stolen vehicles and firearms in Mfeking Reserve, Mtubatuba

THE Mtubatuba community’s crime vigilance has paid off with the recovery of two stolen vehicles and a number of firearms and ammunition on Monday.

After receiving information concerning a VW Polo and a Toyota Hilux, which were suspiciously hidden behind a homestead in Mfeking Reserve, Mtubutubu SAPS and the Organised Crime Unit swooped in and, on closer inspection, confirmed both vehicles had been stolen during the past eight months.

The Polo had been stolen in February in the Mbazwana area and the Hilux was stolen in July last year in the Dukuza area near Stanger.

According to Police Spokesperson Captain Jabulani Mdletshe two 9mm revolvers with 16 live rounds were found after a search of the homestead as well as a shotgun with an additional 13 live rounds for a revolver.

Two men, Nkosinathi Mpanza (32) and Bongani Gabriel Makhanya (24) were arrested at the scene. Both suspects appeared in the Kwamsane Magistrate’ Court on Tuesday. No bail was granted.

Bongani Gabriel Makhanya was back in court on Wednesday with legal representation and Mpanza will return on 18 February for his bail application.
