Relief for commuters

Ngwelezane Taxi Association took over the Dumisane Makhaye route last week

THE war between Ngwelezane Taxi Association (NTA) and the A Rank Taxi Association, that claimed people’s lives in Dumisane Mahaye township, has ended.

This following the announcement by the KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport Willies Mchunu at uMhlathuze sports-field last Saturday.

He said the NTA must take over the route after commuters have been left with no reliable transportation for years.

Police were deployed to the area to prevent any violence.

Both associations have been at each other’s throats over the route, leaving commuters without transport. During the conflict, the A Rank Association opened a case against the NTA, claiming the route belonged to them.

Mchunu pleaded with the community to report to authorities any illegal taxis operating in the area.

A week after the NTA took over the route, commuters said they had finally found relief and hoped the violence would end.

‘I am glad we can finally be at peace. It was so difficult not having proper transportation. Now we can get to work in time,’ said one passager.

NTA chairperson Skhumbuzo Buthelezi told the Zululand Observer everything was running swimmingly and that no threats have been made towards the association.

‘We have been operating smoothly since the announcement and commuters are happy with the service,’ said Buthelezi.

The community welcomed Mchunu’s decision.
