Hefty sentence for robber, rapist

Gauteng woman (38) raped in front of her children.

A MAN who raped a mother in the presence of her children and their friends, and robbed the family of items worth more than R120 000, was sentenced to 25 years imprisonment in the Richards Bay Magistrate’s Court last week.

Sibusiso Ngema (25) was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for robbery with aggravating circumstances and 10 years imprisonment for rape, while his co-accused Thulani Gumede (31) and Mhlaba Nzimande (24) were found not guilty.

On the 21 November 2011, the 38-year-old victim, a Gauteng resident who was on holiday in Richards Bay, was raped and robbed of her BMW luxury vehicle, cash, laptops, cell phones and jewellery.

The incident happened at an accommodation facility in Richards Bay on the night the family arrived for a short stay.

They were at the self-catering unit and went to a local store and when they returned, the men were waiting for them.

The accused threatened the complainant and family with firearms during the incident and assaulted her.
