Best of both treatments

First cancer patient goes home

BOTH on a techno-medical and compassionate level, it’s a huge ‘thumbs up’ from the first oncology patient treated on advanced radiation therapy equipment at the Richards Bay Medical Institute.

Doug Bain, completed the last of his 30 treatments on Friday and is raring to get back to his job as CEO of the Randpark Golf Club and to be reunited with his sons Jonathan (4) and Joshua (2).

Wife Desiree was at the centre to take him home, and enthused about the improvement in Doug’s condition – attributed both to the modern technology and the special care he has received over the past two months.

‘As a family we missed him so much but this was offset by knowing he was in such good hands.’

Having prior to the radiation therapy had a large tumour removed from his brain, Doug (41) is now ‘back to normal’, sleeping well and enjoying his old energy levels.

There is now no apparent cancer activity but he will be back in three weeks for a check-up and his condition will continue to be monitored.

‘It’s Prof Jordaan and the wonderful team here that have put him in a positive mindset, and that in turn has aided his healing,’ said Desiree.

‘We will go back to Jo’burg and spread the message about this wonderful city, the friendliness of the people and the quality of treatment that is available.’

Labelled a ‘fantastic, positive patient’, Doug Bain and his wife Desiree were given a rousing send-off when he completed his last radiation treatment on Friday.
