Mother poisons children

Ulundi woman survives family suicide

SHE fed her three children yoghurt laced with poison.

A Nongoma Regional Court sentenced Thobile Shangase (26) of Mbilane Reserve, Ulundi to 25 years in prison for two counts of murder and attempted murder.

Eight-year-old Lusanda and her sibling Akhona Qwabe (5) died after their mother gave them poisoned yoghurt.

Shangase and her three-year-old son survived after spending weeks in hospital.

The motive of the killing is still unknown.

Shangase was arrested after she was discharged from hospital.

She appeared in court on 24 January and was convicted and sentenced to 10 years for each murder and five years for attempted murder.

KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lt Gen Mmamonnye Ngobeni applauded the Ulundi detectives for speedily investigating and gathering the evidence that led to the prosecution.

‘Crimes against children remain priority for police and these convictions give hope to those that are abused,’ she said.
