Rape accused granted bail

Police investigate Aquadene rape

A COMMUNITY leader who allegedly promised a young woman help to secure an enrolment at a local high school and then raped her, was released on R3 000 bail.

Dumisani Ndlazi (35) was arrested two weeks ago and appeared in the Richards Bay Magistrate’s Court on Friday for a formal bail application.

The prominent person and ward committee member in Aquadene is accused of allegedly raping a 19-year-old woman on 14 January.

It is believed the victim’s family had approached the accused for assistance to help them secure an enrolment at a local high school for their younger sister.

The victim and her relative visited the accused’s house and gave him the documents. He told them they could deliver the outstanding paperwork the following day.

When the victim went to drop off the completed documents the following morning at 7.30am, the accused invited her in and raped the young woman.

The family of the victim is still battling to come to terms with the terrible ordeal.

‘My sister just arrived in Richards Bay this year from Johannesburg and we were desperate to find her place at a local high school.

‘All she wanted was to go to school and complete her education. Now she has encountered such horrible setbacks because of this tragic incident.

‘She has been in counselling sessions and is in a safe house. I am uncertain how long she will be away from school, but we want the law to take its course and justice to prevail.’
