Five years sentence for sibling murder

Man jailed after helping to murder mentally ill brother

A MFEKAYI man was sentenced to five years prison sentence for helping his father murder his 32-year-old mentally ill brother.

The case made national headlines after the decomposed body of Mfaniseni Mngomezulu was discovered in the Nyalazi River on 11 September 2012.

An investigation, led by the Mtubatuba SAPS, soon revealed the victim was allegedly assaulted with a stick and a sharp object by his father, with the assistance of his younger brother, for slaughtering a goat without his father’s consent.

His body was then dumped in the river, only to be found a month later.

Assan Mngomezulu (62) and Nkosinathi Mngomezulu (20) were both charged with murder.

However, Assan was exonerated from the Mtubatuba High Court due to insufficient evidence.

Last week, the case took yet another surprising turn when Nkosinathi finally confessed to helping his father murder his brother, during his sentencing.

Police have been issued an order to re-arrest Assan.

Nkosinathi will do his time at the Qalakabusha prison outside Empangeni.
