Zululand districts show improvement

uThungulu and uMkhanyakude named as 'most improved districts' in KwaZulu-Natal

THE uThungulu District said they are ‘very pleased’ with the matric results of 2013 after being named one of three most improved districts in KwaZulu-Natal.

uThungulu District posted a 72.71% pass rate – a 5.51% increase on the previous year with uMkhanyakude District scoring a 74.15% pass rate – a 9% improvement compared to 2012.

Despite the urban-rural divide, lack of basic necessities such as electricity and running water in many schools, uMkhanyakude, uThukela and uThungulu districts were hailed for showing improved performances since 2010.

‘We have noticed the passes are of higher quality,’ said uThungulu District Education Director, David Chonco.

‘There certainly has been more Admission to Bachelor and Diploma passes. We wish to thank principals and teachers for working hard throughout the year with pupils. We also acknowledge the efforts and cooperation of unions and local communities as well as support provided by office-based educators,’ Chonco told Eyethu Baywatch.

Rewarding rural pupils for outstanding achievements despite adversity, the Solomon Mahlangu Scholarship Fund award went to uThungulu’s Noxolo Cebekhulu of Mgezeni High and Skhumbuzo Matine of Ikusasalethu Secondary in uMkhanyakude.
