Science centre’s stylish birthday bash

The second oldest science centre celebrating their birthday.

THE University of Zululand (Unizulu) Science Centre celebrated its 27th birthday in style at the Moses Mabida in Durban last Wednesday .

The local Science Centre is the second oldest in southern Africa and older than half the science centres in the world.

Started in 1986 on the Unizulu campus, it moved to its present location at the ZCBF Community Park in 1997. Since moving it has increased its staff, floor area and visitor numbers.

This talented team has triumphed with a truckload of trophies, including winning the coveted National Science and Technology Forum Award twice and being a finalist twice more.

In 2011 the Unizul Science Centre opened the first dedicated Children’s Museum on the African continent and represents Africa on the World Science Centre Committee.

Ten members of this top team attended the Southern African Association of Science and Technology Centres conference in Durban.

Director Derek Fish also welcomed ‘visiting veteran’ Alfred Tsipa, who served on the team from 1994 – 2009. Along with Mdumiseni Nxumalo and Reuben Nzimakwe, they have contributed over 80 years’ service to the team.
