Chief’s succession dispute intensifies

The conflict is still ongoing amongst Mbuyazi family members about who will be the new chief

Conflict between members of the Mbuyazi royal family members in KwaMbonambi has intensified with some clan members refuting claims by Siyabonga Mbuyazi that he has been appointed the new chief by the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA).

Siyabonga Mbuyazi told the Zululand Observer last week that according to family history and tradition, he was the rightful heir apparent following the passing of Mbonambi Chief Mtholeni Mbuyazi in 2005.

According to Siyabonga his father was supposed to have been appointed chief instead of Mtholeni.

After the chief’s death, a quarrel also developed between his sons Mkhanyiseni and Sibusiso regarding succession.

The matter eventually landed in court, but Mkhanyiseni has since died.

‘History, if you apply it correctly, makes it clear that I am suppose to be the chief. We are now busy with COGTA sorting out everything before I can take over officially,’ Siyanbonga said.

Family spokesperson Meshack Mbuyazi said no chief has been appointed and the decision will be made by the High Court, COGTA or his Majesty, King Zwelithini.

‘The decision is out of the family’s hands and will be made by the High Court. At the moment there has been no official decision about the new chief and all the gossip is simply speculation not based on any facts.’

COGTA provincial spokesperson Vernon Mchunu said according to their knowledge no chief has been appointed and the case is still serving in the High Court..
