Pandemonium disrupts court

Prisoner escapes from eSikhawini Regional Court

PANDEMONIUM ruled at the eSikhawini Regional Court on Tuesday with a string of surprise incidents – from technical glitches, the escape of an awaiting trial prisoner and the arrest of three teenage robbers.

Proceedings got off to a shaky start when the court recording machine broke down and all cases had to be remanded to a later date.

While officials were trying to sort out the logistical nightmare, three opportunistic teenagers mugged a frail woman returning from a clinic visit and made off with her cell phone, cash and clinic card outside the court.

As police chased the boys, eventually apprehending them, the diversion resulted in a prisoner escaping from the court’s holding cells.

The young men, aged between 15 and 17, were arrested and charged with robbery and remained in custody for a formal bail hearing.

Meanwhile, Empangeni SAPS spokesperson Captain Mbongiseni Mdlalose confirmed that Ayanda Khoza (22) from uMkhobose Reserve escaped from the holding cells during the commotion and that a case of escape from lawful custody was opened against him at the police station.

Khoza was to appear in court on charges or common robbery.

‘Around noon when the guards were busy taking other prisoners to court, he saw an opportunity and escaped. Police are still searching for him and request the community to assist with any information concerning Khoza,’ said Mdlalose.

He added that an investigation will be conducted to assess the nature off his escape.

Mdlalose said the community can contact eSikhawini SAPS on 035-7968027 or on the toll-free Crime Stop number 080010111 or 10111.
