Richards Bay crime rise alert

Richards Bay homeowners urged to take caution as burglaries spike

POLICE have noted with concern a surge in residential burglaries in Meerensee, Arboretum and Wildenweide.

This was reported during the Richards Bay Community Policing Forum (CPF) meeting held at Richards Bay Police Station.

The trend revealed that houses were being targeted during the day when residents were not home.

In most instances, the properties’ doors or windows were forced open and valuables such as flat screen televisions, laptops and light appliances were taken.

In the case of unarmed properties, home owners only discovered the crimes when they get back from work in the evenings.

Meanwhile, motor vehicle thefts also came under the spotlight.

A Toyota Fortuner was stolen from the undercover parking at Boardwalk Inkwazi Shopping Centre on Tuesday afternoon, as was a VW Golf which was parked on the pavement outside a Meerensee property on Wednesday night..

Motorists are urged to double check their vehicles are locked, especially after using a remote button, due to the prevalence of ‘jammers’.
