Beer loving hobos raise funds for SPCA

Locals conduct a social experiment by posing as hobos and raise funds for the SPCA

A GROUP of Empangeni residents have conducted a random personal social experiment on the average amount of money accumulated by hobos. This after the ongoing influx of vagrants to the area and who post themselves at Zululand intersections, annoying motorists.

Chris de Beer (46) and Boeta Lloyd (17) got busy and drew up signs of sincerity – ‘I do not need work, I need money for beer’ standing at the robots of the R34 intersection parallel to Rex Henderson Drive.

The men supervised by George Pistorius (23) collected a total sum of R345 in just two hours.

‘It is surprising how charitable and generous Empangeni residents are,’ said de Beer ‘Some motorists were pleased with our honesty though,’ he added.

Not everyone took this initiative in good spirits as some residents found the ‘hobos’ to be quite crafty in using the SPCA as a scapegoat.

‘The manner in which the donation was raised was in good spirits but regarding the Fundraising Act it is illegal to raise funds for a registered organisation or non-governmental organisation without the permission of the authority or organisation in question,’ Chairman of the Empangeni SPCA Dave Whittaker said.

De Beer, Lloyd and Pistorius purchased 50kg of dog food with the money that was raised and handed it over to the SPCA.

‘We are extremely thankful for the donation.

These men had great intentions at heart and the SPCA really needs the assistance. However please obtain permission for future fund-raisers,’ said Whittaker.
