Aquadene High School teacher guilty of stabbing a man to death

A RICHARDS Bay teacher was sentenced to 20 years behind bars for stabbing a man to death in a revenge attack outside Thengeduze Tavern in eSikhawini late last year.

The former Aquadene High School teacher Thobani Zondo (39) was convicted of murder at the eSikhawini Regional Court on Tuesday.

He appeared with his brother Lethukuthula Zondo (29), who was found guilty of assault and sentenced to six years imprisonment.

The victim, Siyabonga Mbatha (27) was first approached by Lethukuthula Zondo on 1 December, when he confronted and accused Mbatha of talking to his girlfriend.

Harsh words were exchanged between the two men before a fight ensued, leaving Mbatha blacked-out on the floor.

Upon waking, Mbatha left the premises and made his was down the street.

During this time, the brother of Lethukuthula Zondo, Thobani Zondo had heard the news of the fight and wanted to seek revenge.

The men sought Mbatha and when they found him Thobani Zondo proceeded to stab Mbatha three times in the back and twice in the chest.

Fleeing the scene, passers-by rushed Mbatha to the closest clinic but he died en route.

The brothers were subsequently arrested by members of the eSikhawini SAP and first appeared in court in December.

Both men will serve their sentences at the Qalakabusha prison.
