Shop owner murdered in field

Man lured to his death by alleged herbalists

MTUNZINI shop owner Zamo Hlongwane (34) was murdered in the Ntuze area on the night of August 28th by men who had claimed to be fisherman and herbalists.

According to Empangeni SAPS spokesperson, Captain Mbongeni Mdlalose, Hlongwane was approached by four men the day before his murder. They claimed to be fishermen and herbalist from the local area.

The men did not make a purchase from the shop and then left. They same men returned the next day with an additional accomplice and lured Hlongwane to a nearby field, claiming to have found a root that would heal his eyes as it is believed Hlongwane wore glasses.

A few hours later the five men returned to the shop without Hlongwane and threatened the shop assistant with a knife. The men fled the scene after stealing money, liquor and foodstuffs.

Upon arrival at the shop, the Mtunzini police were directed to the field where they found Hlongwane’s body. He had been struck with an unidentified blunt object.

A case of murder and business robbery has been opened and is under investigation.

No arrests have been made and the Mtunzini police appeals to the community to come forward with any information that could help solve the case. Contact Investigating Officer Lieutenant Alistair Mthetwa on 035-3409802.
