Where learners reach their full potential

Established in 1957, Empangeni High School is the largest and best known multi-cultural high school in Zululand that accommodates diverse learners.

The school boasts a beautiful, modern, well-equipped school building complex and widespread sport fields.

Academics: The school has achieved excellent results over the years. Having numerous learners achieve positions in the King Cetshwayo District Top Ten, we are proud of Lethokuhle Mgabi, who achieved 92.7% in his 2018 Matric exams and finished first in the whole King Cetshwayo District. Head boy, Irfaan Sabat claimed 5th in the District for 2020.

Dedicated educators ensure that the 1327 learners are led through a curriculum of over 25 subjects to reach their full academic potential.

Where EHS stands out: Empangeni high School offers Music, we are the only public school that offers IT as a subject in the whole of The King Cetshwayo District and the only public school that offers Marine Sciences in the whole of Kwa-Zulu Natal. This year we have also teamed up with Fezile’s Fashion Skills Academy. Fashion, learners travel weekly to Durban to attend classes here they can become accredited and qualified fashion designers.

2020 Matriculants achieved a pass rate of 95%; 224 Matric learners earned 283 distinctions, 154 (72%) Bachelors and 51 (23%) Diploma passes.

In the sport and culture societies, each learner is encouraged to exercise his or her talent in an atmosphere of rich, traditional, and healthy camaraderie.

Sports offered include Rugby, Cricket, Hockey, Netball, Athletics, Swimming, Tennis, Soccer, Volleyball, E-sport (only public school in the King Cetshwayo District) and Squash, with numerous learners being chosen to represent Northern Coastal, ZLD, KZN and even Springbok teams over the years.

EHS learners have represented the school and country internationally with:

  • GLOBE (for young scientists) – 2021 Two of our learners out of the whole of South Africa were chosen as – Globe ambassadors for 2021. (There were only two selected from South Africa and both learners are from EHS!)
  • RUGBY – IRELAND 2018
  • OLDENBURG Bonsel Study Tour – 2018: Three of EHS’s learners and Deputy Principal Mrs Naline Somnath accompanied Mr Oldenburg to Europe in December 2018.
  • GLOBE – INDIA 2016
  • Various Exchange programmes – Germany, America

In line with the fourth industrial revolution, EHS offers:

  • Robotics
  • Coding (Now introduced from Grade 8)
  • IT
  • English Lab

Cultural activities offered include: drama, public speaking, chess, land service, bridge building, Teenagers Against Drug Abuse (TADA), first aid, C-King, Representative Council For Learners (RCL), choir, band, Interact, music, cheer leading and music theatre. The school boasts a well-equipped music centre with 150 music learners.

EHS’ marching band has done exceptionally well throughout the years and has won the SA Championships over 10 times. Its choir was crowned National Champions twice in 2017 and 2018.

Numerous EHS learners have been selected for the KZN Youth Orchestra, KZN Youth Choir and KZN Wind Band over the years.

A musical theatre production is staged by EHS every second year.

Being voted a couple of times (including this year) as the Best high School in Zululand by the Zululand community in the Zululand Observer’s Readers Choice awards.
