Minimum wages shoots up in security sector

Increases and special allowances can also be expected for those doing night shift work and cleaning

MINIMUM wages in the private security sector was on Thursday bumped up by an average of 7.1 percent.

The new sectoral determination, which prescribes minimum wages, number of leave days, working hours and termination rules, will expire on 31 August next year.

The raise is in line with a three-year wage deal struck last year between private security industry employer bodies and trade unions.

Signatories were the Security Association of South Africa (SASA)‚ the South African National Security Employers Association (SANSEA), the Congress of South African Private Security (COSAPS) and 15 unions, including the South African Transport and Allied Workers Union (SATAWU).

Part of the agreement was to address the wage gap between the higher grade security officers and those in the lower wage band.

Increases and special allowances can also be expected for those doing night shift work and cleaning.
