Taxi rank revamp on the roll

The Empangeni Taxi rank Lot 63 will soon have a new look

CONSTRUCTION is ready to roll to upgrade the Empangeni Lot 63 taxi rank.

A budget of R5-million has been approved and a company appointed to oversee the construction.

According to the uMhlathuze Municipality Mkhadi Trading Services will carry out the work.

‘It is an African female owned entity benefitting as part of the 40% supply chain management policy recently reviewed to empower women, youth and disabled people on capital projects,’ the municipality said in a statement.

The upgrade will include the installing of new steel shelters, reconfiguring the rank, improve ablution facilities and facilitate effective access control to benefit commuters, traders and taxi operators.

Lot 63 is situated between Power Spar and Shoprite Centre and is used by thousands of commuters from eNseleni, eSikhaleni and Ngwelezana daily.

Improvement of walkways along Maxwell Street and other beautification initiatives will also be undertaken.
During construction, eSikhaleni taxis will use the OK Bazaar parking area as a loading zone.
