Youth advised to cut own path

BWA hosts Businesswomen of Tomorrow event for local pupils

STATISTICS show that 90% of school learners get it wrong the first time when picking university or college courses.
The reason is mostly because parents want to make the study decisions for their children.

This is according to Saryx Engineering Group Director Ingrid Osborne, addressing 120 pupils at the Businesswomen’s Association’s Businesswomen of Tomorrow event held in Richards Bay on Friday.

‘The problem is your parents are not going to embark on your careers and it often only leads to a waste of money and setting students back four years.

‘There are careers today that did not exist when your parents were young.

‘My advice is to look at all the new career opportunities not flooding the market.

‘Do a lot of research, because it is a four-year process that only you will be responsible for at the end of the day.

‘The same applies to other important decisions you have to make in your life.

‘With the recent municipal elections, many youngsters voted for the first time and it made me wonder if their decisions were their own.

‘Do not waste the vote, you are responsible for what happens in your government.

‘Your parents can help you vote, but you will be left holding the baton.’
