Interim CEO has wealth of experience

When public anger in Mtubatuba reached boiling point in May after taps ran dry in the region, it was Duze who stepped in to save the day

MHLATHUZE Water has announced senior KZN Cogta official, Mthokozisi Duze, as the local utility’s new interim CEO, welcoming his extensive experience in disaster management to the ‘water’ table.

Duze, who will fulfill this role while continuing his work as Deputy Director General of Development and Planning at the Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs, has spearheaded a number of programmes in the province.

He has forged international partnerships to benefit KZN, including ties with the New Jersey non-profit 911 Fund, which spesialises in emergency response services.

The 911 Fund provided voluntary training to municipalities on firefighting and incident command to ensure local fire and rescue service units are equipped with world class skills.

He also led a team to visit desalination plants in San Diego to gain more knowledge about the alternative water supply source and will pilot purification projects in regions battling with devastating drought conditions.

When public anger in Mtubatuba reached boiling point in May after taps ran dry in the region, it was Duze who stepped in to save the day.

Two new pumps were bought and a third sent for refurbishment to produce a total of 13.3 megalitres of water a day from the mere 4.3 megalitres previously produced from four boreholes around the town.

Mhlathuze Water Public Relations Manager Zanele Bingwa said the Mhlathuze team is excited to have Duze on board.

‘He has been involved in numerous government special interventions on service delivery enhancements and many of these programmes created jobs and improved the lives of community members.

‘At Mhlathuze he is responsible for overall strategic management of the organisation, ensuring that our mission and vision are upheld as well as building staff confidence to strive in executing the organisation’s objectives with dignity, and serving our communities with pride.’

Duze has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Human and Social Studies and majored in Development Studies and Strategic Management.

He also acquired various international accredited certificates, including Development Planning Management from INVENT Germany, Common Property Management from the University of Indiana, and is finalising his master’s degree in Public Administration at the University of KZN.
