uThungulu focus on green economy

uThungulu District Municipality officials feel one of the best ways to do this is to 'decarbonize' the production of energy.

THE focus of the second annual District Economic Development Symposium and SMME Fair 2016 sent a clear message – the uThungulu district is pushing for a more eco-friendly approach to governance.

The symposium, held at the Umfolozi Casino Resort on Tuesday, put forward a number of new objectives with regard to greening the economy.

Strong scientific evidence of climate change as a result of carbon pollution has culminated in global calls for reduction in carbon emissions from every economic sector.

uThungulu District Municipality officials feel one of the best ways to do this is to ‘decarbonize’ the production of energy.

‘The development of renewable energy is not only critical in terms of lowering greenhouse gas emissions, but forms the backbone of achieving provincial energy security and self-sufficiency, as well as improved access to energy among the poor and stimulating decent and sustainable job creation,’ read a statement issued by uThungulu.

The large number of delegates were given the opportunity to become part of formulating a clear and detailed plan to implement projects and programmes in line with the district’s greener economy concept.
