Millions up in smoke during protest

Protestors block main access road to Richards Bay Minerals

THREE of Richards Bay Minerals’ heavy mobile equipment vehicles were set alight on Tuesday night by community members.

The drama continued yesterday morning (Wednesday) when a group of protesters blocked the main access road to the mine, reportedly stoning vehicles and blocking routes.

By 11am, the company stated the roads had already been reopened and all staff members were safe.

‘Employees and contractors were able to get to RBM.

‘At this stage we are not sure why the road was blocked and will be engaging with the relevant structures in the community.

‘In a separate incident, we can confirm three vehicles were burnt last night.

‘Fortunately, there were no injuries.’

RBM said its security team is working closely with the SAPS to monitor the situation and ensure the continued safety of its employees, contractors and community members.

The KwaMbonambi SAPS said no arrests were made and no cases opened.
