BREAKING NEWS: Community blocks road to mine

Picketers burnt tyres on the road leading to Richards Bay Minerals (RBM), barricading the only route to the mine.

KWAMBONAMBI community members have again taken their frustrations to the street this morning, reportedly in protest of lack of job opportunities.

Picketers burnt tyres on the road leading to Richards Bay Minerals (RBM), barricading the only route to the mine.

Hundreds of RBM employees are gathered at Alkantstrand to wait for the demonstration to end.

RBM stated it is displeased with the disruptive behaviour of the marchers.

‘RBM is committed to engaging in a fair and transparent manner and will always endeavour to use the existing engagement platforms in place.

‘The disruptive behaviour witnessed earlier today is unacceptable and we appeal to the youth to make use of the relevant structures in place to address their concerns.

‘The safety of all our employees, contractors and communities remains a priority.

‘We appreciate the support and assistance received from local authorities and structures, and will keep the channels of engagement open until we find a resolution to this matter.’
