Mandeni estate development in spotlight

Mandeni residents raise concerns around proposed housing estate.

WHILE most of the Mandeni residents who attended a meeting to discuss the proposed ‘gated housing’ development felt that the estate will go ahead, the municipality invited those who still had reservations about the development to urgently submit their objections in writing.

The meeting, chaired by Mandeni Ward 3 councillor Patrick Mngadi, was attended by 50 concerned residents.

Brief presentations were made by representatives from Danie Kolver of the eLan Property Group and Rob Kirby of Rob Kirby Associates before the discussion was opened up to the floor.

At present, 385 houses surrounding the Mandini Country Club have been ear-marked for the development and it was how these houses were going to be integrated into the Jackalberry Estate that was the main concern.

The developers confirmed no structural changes will be necessary on the existing houses.

As home ownership changes, conformity to a particular design will be implemented by the new buyers.

The issue of existing property fences was also raised and, although they will not have to be removed immediately, it was said that over the long term it would be preferable to have no fencing.

Sappi has confirmed that the company will be responsible for the R10-million estate boundary fencing.

Levies and other financial issues will be handled by the Home Owners Association and they are at liberty to set their own fees and also allow residents ‘leave’ on their levy payments.

Other issues discussed were access control including access of school pupils into the estate, security and existing bad elements living in the area.
