Father fatally injured during rigging incident at South 32's Hillside smelter in Richards Bay.

A 29-YEAR-old employee was fatally injured at South32’s Hillside smelter in Richards Bay yesterday morning during a rigging incident at the carbon bake furnace.
Siphamandla Ngubane was a contractor employed by SQS Rigging Services and had been working at Hillside since 2013.

Operations at the carbon bake furnace have since been suspended, but South32 confirmed on Wednesday that production continued at the rest of the smelter.

‘We are deeply saddened and express our condolences to Siphamandla’s family, friends and our contractor partner,’ said South32 SA Vice President: Corporate Affairs, Lulu Letlape.

‘We are providing trauma support and counselling to the family and employees at Hillside.
‘We are committed to the safety of our employees and contractors. Our emergency management team has been activated and we are working with local authorities as part of a full investigation,’ Letlape told the Zululand Observer.
