Mondi drains water wastage

The system will cut water usage at the plant by more than 60 000 kilolitres per month.

MONDI is fitting its Richards Bay mill with a state-of-the-art system that uses a continuous loop water management design, enabling them to save every drop.

The AESSEAL system, being installed by local company Easy Coat, will cut water usage at the plant by more than 60 000 kilolitres per month, helping to conserve the precious source during the severe Zululand drought.

A total of 167 type-SWO2 and SWO3 water management systems will use recycled water to cool, lubricate and flush mechanical seals in the plant.

They will replace a competitor’s once through flushing designs that need a constant supply of fresh water.

Currently, the competitor’s cooling and lubrication systems to be changed are consuming an average of 63 210 kilolitres of water every month.

With the cost of water calculated at R 2,50 per kilolitre, excluding the effluent treatment costs, water savings of R158 025 per month will deliver a return on the investment.

The AESSEAL system installed at Mondi’s Merebank Mill outside Durban 10 years ago has so far resulted in multi-million rand’s worth of water savings and substantially reduced downtime on rotating equipment.

Easy Coat Managing Director Sakkie de Villiers stated the company has fitted 152 such systems over the past 12 years with successful results.

The company received Mondi’s order in February and has already installed the first 64 systems during an annual shutdown in March.

The remaining 102 systems are expected to be installed this month (July).
