Top 10 best-selling cars in May

Department of Trade and Industry have released the figures for new car sales in SA.

EACH month, the Department of Trade and Industry releases the figures for new car sales in SA.

For May, Naamsa reported that aggregate industry sales were down from 49 449 to 47 868 units, when compared to the same period a year ago.

Hyundai and Kia do not submit their figures and Mercedes-Benz SA is now only reporting aggregated new vehicle sales data (for the record, the German brand sold 2198 passenger vehicles and 550 commercial vehicles, and exported 9108 vehicles in May).

So, what happened in May?

Well, the Volkswagen Polo is still out in front, edging its Volkswagen Polo Vivo cousin by just three units.

Toyota’s combination of the Corolla, Auris and Corolla Quest (unfortunately individual model figures are not available) thus falls from second to third.

The Ford EcoSport, meanwhile, climbs two spots to fourth, with the local arm of the automaker admitting that demand is outstripping supply at the moment.

This sees the recently tweaked Toyota Etios fall a further place to fifth.

Ford’s Fiesta drops from last month’s impressive showing to sixth spot, closely followed by the Ford Figo, which holds steady in seventh.

The Chevrolet Spark makes a sudden return to the table in eighth, pushing the BMW 3 Series down one to ninth.

The Volkswagen Golf also falls one place to tenth, rounding out the table at the expense of the Datsun GO.

Other interesting snippets from May’s figures show that the new Renault Captur sold an impressive 425 units in its first (partial) month on sale, making it the French brand’s best-seller in May.

The new Jeep Renegade, meanwhile, managed a not-to-be-sniffed-at 210 units, seven more than the Opel Mokka.

The Land Rover Discovery Sport came to the party with 183 units.

Somewhat disappointingly, however, the rather interesting new Citroen C4 Cactus could muster just 27 units.
