City of uMhlahtuze Mayor speaks at SMME workshop.

LOCAL small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs) received valuable insight on maintaining a sustainable business at a suppliers’ development workshop in Empangeni on Friday.

Hosted by Mhlathuze Water at the Umfolozi Casino Resort, the workshop focused on the importance of SMMEs and how their growth and mobilisation would benefit the city as a whole.

Identifying challenges and finding workable solutions with the help and advice from experienced stakeholders were key topics of discussion.

City of uMhlathuze Mayor, Cllr Mduduzi Mhlongo, said there was an urgent need for change and development.

‘Change must start with us in order for others to follow. This is a giant step to ensure we share in the wealth of this country and we need to ensure that the people benefit from the city’s economy,’ Mhlongo said.

‘SMMEs play a pivotal role in the growth and development of the city.’

Mhlathuze Water Supply Chain Manger Zakithi Magubane, said that setting goals was paramount for aspiring entrepreneurs.

‘Planning is crucial to start a business and this is the perfect opportunity to take time to plan, communicate and connect with one another.’

Entrepreneurs were encouraged to brainstorm and interact with one another throughout the event.

Representatives from Federated Employers’ Mutual Assurance, KZN Provincial Treasury, SARS and the Department of Trade and Industry touched on important aspects that play a crucial part in the structure of a business or corporation, such as bid rigging, tax evasion and the new BEE codes.
