Teachers J Naicken and S Nathan are progressing to the provincial round of the Department of Basic Education's National Teacher Awards, after securing top spots in the 'Excellence in Primary School Teaching' category.

TWO teachers at Bay Primary School in Brackenham are progressing to the provincial round of the Department of Basic Education’s National Teacher Awards, after securing top spots in the ‘Excellence in Primary School Teaching’ category.

Teachers J Naicken and S Nathan were nominated by their colleagues and competed against 12 participants from four districts to win first and second place respectively.

These outstanding teachers will now compete at the provincial level on Tuesday in Durban and if successful they will represent KZN at the national competition.

Combined the educators have over 40 years of teaching experience and are passionate about education and making a difference in the lives of their pupils.

The National Teacher Awards Scheme was conceptualised and launched in 2000 and acknowledges the extraordinary efforts made by the teachers, most of whom come from poor communities.

It is one of the ways in which the Department of Basic Education acknowledges, encourages dedicated and caring teachers in their efforts to develop each learner as a citizen of a democratic, non-racial and non-sexist South Africa.
