A groundbreaking initiative to professionalise the taxi industry launched

LOOK out for well behaved taxi drivers!

They’re on a drive to known as the most courteous and well behaved motorists on the road.

This after a local initiative is set to radically change perceptions of the taxi industry and the stigma often attached to public transport.

Hardworking drivers, rank managers, associations and taxi stakeholders will soon be recognised for their contribution to society through a score system connected to public awards.

The scores will be awarded by the taxi passengers, based on their experiences while commuting.

The aim of the groundbreaking initiative is to promote hard work, good ethics, customer care and professionalism in the industry.

It is spearheaded by the North Coast Group (NCG) in a joint venture with various taxi associations.

It is also an innovative way to ensure productivity and road safety.

‘The government and its structures can only do so much to ensure policies and strategies are implemented,’ said Lindiwe Dube of North Coast Group.

According to Dube, the project will go beyond the driver award ceremony.

A road safety management strategy has been established to monitor, evaluate and strengthen road worthiness mechanisms to ensure safety of vehicles.

‘Drivers will be educated about the dangers of irresponsible road usage. We have intensified efforts to deal with speeding and to determine appropriate speed limits,’ she said.

Vehicle safety standards will also be a major part of this initiative.

Dube said professionalising the taxi industry is key to transformation.

‘Over the years the exceptional service provided by the industry has been discredited by the violence and other factors.

‘However this does not mean they don’t contribute to progress and the economy of the country.

‘They are also a business – that’s why it is vital to bring growth and radical transformation,’

The programme will also focus on customer care, with aim to assist taxi drivers to provide quality service to passengers.

Drivers will receive basic business information to reach their objectives, and assist them venture in other transport businesses.
