Municipal Manager suspended

Provincial Administrator Bamba Ndwandwe has launched an investigation and suspended Municipal Manager Mzimela

UMKHANYAKUDE District Municipal Spokesperson Mdu Dlamini confirmed the Municipal Manager (MM), Elliott Mzimela, has been suspended pending investigations.

While Dlamini could confirm neither the reason for Mzimela’s suspension nor the nature of the investigation, he did say provincial appointed administrator Bamba Ndwandwe last week advised council to suspend Mzimela.

‘Council took the decision last week to suspend the MM following the advice of the administrator so he can start investigations,’ said Dlamini.

It is thought Mzimela’s suspension will stand for the duration of investigations.

uMkhanyakude District Municipality was in October placed under administration by COGTA (Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs) MEC Nomusa Dube-Ncube.

At the same time, steps were taken to radically improve the district’s critical water shortage.

uMgeni Water was appointed to fix leaks, drill boreholes and reticulate water to reduce the number of illegal connections.

Dlamini said work has begun on a pipeline to serve the Machibini community near Jozini, as well as in the uMhlabuyalingana Local Municipality in the district’s far north.

Dlamini said more boreholes will be drilled in Mtubatuba and KwaMsane and the drilling of wells in the Mfolozi riverbed should soon begin.
