Richards Bay beach spot becomes toxic to tourism

On Mondays, it is up to the City of uMhlathuze municipal cleaning staff, armed with overalls and trash pickers, to tackle the monstrosity from 6am till around 3pm.

EVERY weekend of revelry leaves one of Richards Bay’s most scenic beach areas shrouded in plastic, shattered glass, plastic bags, condoms, empty bottles and flattened wine boxes.

On Mondays, it is up to the City of uMhlathuze municipal cleaning staff, armed with overalls and trash pickers, to tackle the monstrosity from 6am till around 3pm.

Concerns now are that the eyesore will soon extend to Newark Beach once Alkantstrand is closed for the construction of the beach precinct.

The topic was one of many discussed at the Ward 2 committee meeting on Thursday.

With the number of holidaymakers who will arrive, putting added pressure on the beach amenities, the members voiced concern on both cleanliness and public safety issues.

‘Alkantstrand is now effectively out of bounds, especially at high tides, owing to the lack of sand.

‘The alternative swimming spots are Newark Beach and the Bay Hall/Pelican Island area, which are both treacherous, more so for those who do not swim well,’ said Ward member Dave Savides.

‘Add to that the risk of broken glass, reckless beach driving, open braai fires and illegal alcohol consumption, and it is obvious that law enforcement and the implementation of by-laws is crucial – both on the part of the SAPS and municipal authorities.

‘Extra manpower as well as additional rubbish bins are sure to be supplied.’

One community member said she was appalled by the state of the public recreation area on Sunday.

‘We are used to general piggery on weekends, but this was an insight into what we are in for heading into the festive season – rubbish strewn in every direction and empty liquor bottles thrown into the road and floating in the sea.

‘Partying with obvious public drinking leave small children running unattended in the roads.

‘I shudder to think what our beaches and public areas are going to look like closer to Christmas and, of course, New Year.

‘Please can our Municipality not let down our thousands of beach lovers and those who are travelling to visit our ‘beautiful’ City?

‘I beg those in power to pay attention to these areas – they are the draw-card for tourism and a favourite place for your taxpayers to enjoy.’
