CANSA’s array of services for patients

Do you know what CANSA does to help those suffering from cancer every day?

ACCORDING to provincial statistics, the majority of cancer patients hail from rural communities.

The Empangeni based Helen Ludwig CANSA House, which caters to patients across the district, provides PSA testing, pap smears and breast examinations.

The organisation is also responsible for conducting mobile clinic drives aimed at imparting knowledge to the community about the various forms of cancer, prevention and treatment.

CANSA has made great headway in creating a care centre for cancer patients receiving chemotherapy and radiation from the Richards Bay Medical Institute (RBMI).

uThungulu CANSA Community Mobiliser, Lizzy van Zyl said the centre accommodates six patients who receive two meals a day, allowing for a self-catering facility as well.

Private and medical aid patients are provided with transport to treatment sessions at the RBMI as well as a light meal thereafter, unless otherwise indicated upon admission.

CANSA accommodates self-sufficient patients as they do not have a 24-hour caregiver for critically ill patients.

Patients without medical aid are charged a fee of R40 per night for accommodation at the Helen Ludwig CANSA House in Empangeni.
