A MTUNZINI woman has been arrested and charged with the murder of her businessman husband and the attempted murder of his girlfriend, after police uncovered what appears to have been a plot by his estranged wife to gain access to just over R1-million in life insurance money.
Zakithi Nsibande (43) along with two other men, Mthembeni Thusi and Zamani Mkhize, were charged with murder and attempted murder after police investigation revealed sinister motives for the killing of Fani Sipho Nsibande (53).
Nsibande was shot and killed inside his car in the Nsingweni area just outside Mtunzini on 14 August 2014.
According to a statement issued by Empangeni police spokesperson Captain Mbongeni Mdlalose, police arrived on scene at around 8pm.
‘They found two stationary motor vehicles, a bakkie and a sedan, inside which was an African female who was seriously wounded and on the other side of the car an African male was lying face down, already dead,’ he said.
The deceased man was identified as Nsibande, while the injured woman, who had sustained several gunshot wounds to her hands and arms, was hospitalised.
‘Mtunzini police investigated a charge of murder and attempted murder, and evidence led to the arrest of three suspects, including the wife of the deceased.’
According to Cpt Mdlalose, Nsibande had been separated from his wife at the time.
She had approached police to assist with the completion of life insurance claim forms shortly after his death, an act that had made police suspicious.
One of the arrested men was found in possession of a licensed pistol that was seized for ballistic tests.
All three suspects are due to appear in the Mtunzini District Court on 7 December for formal bail applications.
