Crime summit addresses key issues

MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Willies Mchunu promotes the 'United Front Against Crime' initiative.

FOLLOWING the rise of crime in the uThungulu District, MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Willies Mchunu convened a summit at the Ndundulu Sports Ground, Mthonjaneni on Tuesday to address the issue.

Mchunu has formed a ‘United Front Against Crime’ initiative, through which members of the community are requested to work with the police in the fight against crime.

Because of a recent spate of killings, Mthonjaneni was earmarked as a crime hot spot.

This prompted the department to visit the area, talk to community committee structures, traditional leaders, youth structures, SAPS and Community Policing Forums with the aim of finding solutions.

Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Department head CT Mavundla said the community knows who the criminals are and should report them to the police.

He promised his department was going to ensure it would get rid of all the ‘rotten potatoes’ within the SAPS.

Mavundla did, however, heap praises on police members who do their jobs diligently.

‘Church leadership, the youth, traditional leaders, business, civic organisations, inyangas and sangomas must all sing the same tune – away with crime, away,’ Mavundla said.
