New scam targets students

The latest scam preys on unsuspecting students looking for apprenticeships or other learnership opportunities.

LEARNERS need to be on high alert for the latest trick in the hoaxers’ textbook.

The Manufacturing, Engineering and Related Services section of the Sector Education and Training Authorities (merSETA) has cautioned youth members about a scam in which unsuspecting students looking for apprenticeships or other learnership opportunities are asked to deposit money at a Shoprite or Spar supermarket or bank to access training.

‘The matter has been reported to the SA Police Service,’ said merSETA in a statement.

‘We wish to state that a learner wanting to undergo merSETA-funded training does not need to pay to undertake their apprenticeship or learnership.

‘SETA, and the merSETA in this case, may fund the training and in return the employer pays wages or an allowance to the learner undergoing training.’

The organisation pointed out the correct application processes for apprenticeships. An agreement is signed with the employer, be indentured in a designated trade and complete necessary certificates.

‘Please note that merSETA only pays for apprenticeships and learnerships registered with the organisation and not for internships outside merSETA’s jurisdiction.

‘We caution all learners that application processes that deviates from those of merSETA could potentially be a bogus scam and should be investigated before engaging in the process,’ merSETA said.
