uThungulu District Health leads in TB treatment

The National Department of Health paid uThungulu District Health a three-day visit to learn how they achieved these successes.

KZN is leading the way in TB treatment, with the uThungulu District being recently commended for its best TB outcomes over a number of years.

For its unprecedented work done for patients, the district has received a number of accolades for TB Management, currently sitting at number one in the country.

Therefore, the National Department of Health paid uThungulu District Health a three-day visit to learn how they achieved these successes.

National Health Department Director: TB Control and Management, Dr Lindiwe Mvusi confirmed the district’s TB treatment achievement success rate of 80%, while HIV positive individuals with TB is 90%.

‘It has been discovered about 90% of the HIV positive people have TB, therefore we are trying to find ways of addressing this problem.

‘The inroads made by uThungulu Health in terms of TB and HIV treatment need to be sustained and shared nationally.

‘We need to say to them, ‘for you to be able to sustain your successes, you need to have systems put in place’.

‘We, as national health encourage openness from our employees, in order for them to tell us about challenges they encounter daily, and how these can be ironed out, so their gains can be sustained,’ Dr Mvusi added.

She said on Thursday they would visit local hospitals, clinics, Qalakabusha Correctional Facility and uThungulu District Health head-office, to see for themselves how the district goes about doing its daily business of treating TB and HIV positive patients.
