‘Muthi’ syndicate fleeces mourner

Pensioner left with a handful of newspaper instead of bank notes.

A GRIEVING pensioner was scammed out of her life savings, after a heartless syndicate convinced her to withdraw every penny from the bank and then swapped the notes with newspaper.

SAP Major Thulani Zwane issued a warning to the entire province to watch out for similar modus operandi’s, following the incident at Ladysmith.

According to the elderly victim, a man brushed past her, followed by a woman claiming the man had rubbed ‘muthi’ on her.

The woman told her to withdraw her money from the bank before midnight, or else it would disappear.

The ‘Samaritan’ offered to ‘keep the money safe’ and even arranged a ‘police friend’ to assist with the withdrawal.

The pensioner, accompanied by the fake policeman and two women, proceeded to withdraw R29 000 and agreed to place her bank card, pin number and cash into an envelope.

She was dropped at her homestead, where she discovered that the envelope was stuffed with newspaper.

Major Zwane says the suspects targeted victims dressed in black, who appearing to be in mourning.
