Zululand mine unaffected by national strike

ZAC mine remained unaffected by strike action.

ZULULAND Anthracite Colliery near Ulundi was not affected by a national mineworker’s strike today.

This according to media spokesperson for Rio Tinto Mining, David Outhwaite, despite earlier reports that workers had indeed gone on strike.

‘ZAC is not affected by the national strike,’ he said in an e-mailed response. ‘Operations are continuing and ZAC’s staff are on duty as usual.’

Staff at the mine who did not wish to be named also confirmed all was calm.

The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) called on its members to march for ‘decent jobs’.

They were also protesting against Gauteng’s E-tolling system with organised marches in almost every major city.

COSATU KZN Provincial Secretary Edwin Mkhize said that although they had encouraged workers to travel to Durban to join the march, he was not sure about the exact circumstances at ZAC mine.
