UPDATE: Motorist faces charges after resisting arrest

City responds to video clip depicting traffic officers arresting motorist for traffic violation.

THE CITY’S Traffic Department has confirmed that the video clip which went viral on social media on Thursday concerned a female motorist refusing to accept a traffic fine and resisting an arrest.

The video was shared on several social media sites and depicts a scuffle between the driver and law enforcement officers in Meerensee, with her child witnessing the commotion from inside the vehicle.

According to uMhlathuze City Municipal spokesperson Mdu Ncalane, the woman failed to stop at a stop sign and then refused to accept the violation notice from the traffic official who stopped her.

‘She also refused to hand over the vehicle keys, resisted arrest as well as hurling derogatory remarks to our traffic official.

‘She was taken to the police station and charged with interfering with a traffic officer in the performance of her duties, crimen injuria, resisting arrest and failing to stop at a stop sign,’ said Ncalane.

Richards Bay SAPS Communication Officer Captain Debbie Ferreira said the motorist has since been released on a warning.
