One braai, one nation at the heart of Heritage Day

Heritage Day provides us not only with an opportunity to celebrate our diversity of beliefs and traditions, but to enjoy one of our favourite national pastimes. So, find yourself a braai in Empangeni and get grilling!

Defining our respective cultures and heritages in South Africa is at times challenging but often exciting. The humble braai has since become the de facto means for celebrating Heritage Day, and Checkers has everything you need to get you grilling in style. We’ve sourced some of the best braai recipes using only choice ingredients, all of which can be found at your local Checkers store.

Any good braai, however, is not without boerewors. Lucky for you, Checkers not only has a selection of succulent boerewors, but spectacular recipes to match. Switch up your usual braai menu with boerie polenta stacks, a modern take on pap en vleis.

If you’d like to add a savoury crunch alongside your boerie polenta stacks, a roasted corn salad is the way to go. The added avocado will also keep you cool while standing around the braai flames, and is quick and easy to serve.

For all you steak lovers, Checkers hasn’t forgotten. No steak can be tucked into without seasoning. Checkers’ No-Fuss Steak Seasoning blends olive oil and various spices into a dressing. You can’t do without it.

After the braai, treat yourself to the ultimate dessert with a delicious iced coffee. Only a combination of coffee and ice cream can wrap up a wholesome day of good food and friends, and the best part is the chocolate, of course.

Nothing brings the country together like watching the Springboks around a Saturday afternoon braai. Whether you stay in Ladysmith or the Lowveld, rallying behind the national rugby team has become a pastime for many of us. With the Rugby World Cup coming up, make sure that you’re donning the green and gold and that you’re all stocked up on your braai supplies from Checkers.

In between the delightful meals and the rugby, impress your friends and family by learning how to say “to braai” in seven different South African languages. We know you can say it in Afrikaans, but how about in Sesotho?
