UPDATE: Couple in double shooting identified

The gun was registered to the man who apparently used his .38 revolver to shoot his girlfriend, and then himself.

JUST after 8am this morning shots rang out inside a commune on Louis Botha Avenue in Empangeni.

Mbongeleni Shandu (48) and Thokozile Mgenge (33) died in the shooting that police have since preliminarily ruled as a murder, suicide – apparently the result of an argument between the couple.

It is believed Shandu shot her at least once in the head before turning the gun on himself.

The bodies were discovered by Mgenge’s younger sister, who told the Zululand Observer that they had been seeing each other for almost five years.

Shandu was apparently visiting Mgenge at the commune where she had been staying for approximately three months.

Police recovered the .38 revolver that was registered in his name at the scene.

Spokesperson for Empangeni SAPS, Captain Mbongeni Mdlalose confirmed police had opened a case of murder, as well an inquest docket.

‘Preliminarily the evidence suggests that the man shot her, and then himself,’ he said.
