Driver shot during hijacking

Three people took cover in bushes after they were hijacked at an intersection near eShowe.

A MOTORIST and his two passengers narrowly escaped when they were held up on the R34 and R66 intersection at Nkwalini early on Monday evening.

Mathew Nair (20) of KwaDukuza was travelling from Empangeni on the R34 towards eShowe with two passengers in his employer’s White Toyota bakkie (NT62407).

As they approached the intersection, a white VW Polo with GP number plates stopped dead in front of them.

A man got out of the vehicle with a pistol, opened the bakkie’s door and fired one shot into the vehicle, hitting Nair in the leg.

The man instructed them to get out the vehicle and Nair and his passengers took cover in nearby bushes.

The hijackers made a u-turn and sped off in the direction of Empangeni, leaving them stranded next to the road.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the eShowe police on 035 4734215, 10111 or the Crime Stop number 08600 10111.
