Port Authority raise alarm on Facebook job scam

‘Port boss’ imposters con desperate work seekers on social media.

JOB swindlers are now setting up fake accounts on social media to squeeze money from unemployed individuals.

The Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) has discovered replica Facebook profiles for port managers used to trick unsuspecting individuals to part with their savings for work opportunities at South African harbours.

In one case, Durban Port Manager Moshe Motlohi’s social media information and photographs were duplicated on a false Facebook page.

Promises of employment were made from the account and several respondents were duped out of their money.

‘TNPA warns the public against social media scams promising employment with the company,’ said the Authority in a statement.

‘TNPA categorically states that these employment offers have not been issued by the company and advises the public to refrain from responding to such offers or paying any money if requested.

‘Transnet does not under any circumstances require payment from job applicants and only advertises vacancies via the official online career portal on its website or in national print media.

‘All due diligence is followed by the company’s human resources department when positions are advertised.’

Members of the public are requested to report any fraudulent activity on Transnet’s toll free fraud hotline on 0800 003 056; email to transnet@tip-offs.com or fax to 0800 00 77 88.
