uThungulu celebrate women of worth

The Uthungulu District Municipality celebrated Women's month at the Women of Worth celebration with Dr Bongi Ngema-Zuma.

THE country’s first lady has urged women to empower themselves with knowledge and to become victors instead of victims.

Addressing women at the uThungulu District Municipality’s Women of Worth conference on Friday, Dr Bongi Ngema-Zuma, wife of President Jacob Zuma, said, ‘You may not have chosen the situation you have been born into, but you can come out of it, by training yourself and improving your abilities constantly,’ she said.

uThungulu employees celebrated women’s month and were adorned in white to symbolise the strength, purity and radiance of women.

The event focused on the contribution of South African women in the struggle for liberation and democracy in the country.

Speakers, including Mayor TVB Mchunu and Zibu Masotobe Mthiyane, who were part of President Barak Obama’s Youth Africa Leaders Initiative (YALI), tracked the historic progress of women in society and how they can still improve the quality of their lives.

Dr Ngema-Zuma said her role model was her aunt who obtained a driver’s license and bought herself a kombi at the time when driving was considered inappropriate for women.

She later became the first black female school inspector and finished her Master’s degree at a ripe age, even though visually impaired owing to diabetes.

‘Challenges are only stepping stones to new and greater heights,’ she said.
