Student rape case intensifies

New evidence surfaces against the alleged campus rapist

NEW information regarding cell phone records surfaced at the eSikhawini Regional Magistrate’s Court, during the case of a local deejay.

The accused is believed to have lured his victims with a promise of new employment and to have raped them repeatedly, while insisting he was removing ‘bad luck’ from them.

Twenty-six-year-old Sboniso Mthembu was identified by four students from the University of Zululand (Unizulu) earlier this year, as the man who promised them jobs, but then viciously sexually assaulted them outside campus.

Mthembu was arrested and charged with three cases of rape and one of attempted rape, after the matter was referred to the police by university security.

Last month female victims testified against the deejay, insisting he had used muthi, which made them weak.

‘He asked me if I wanted a job. When I said ‘yes’, he then told me I had bad luck and he would remove it from me,’ one victim testified.

‘He took me to a house outside campus and applied some lime lotion on me. It made me weak. I couldn’t move or do anything, and then he raped me time and time again’

According to victims, Mthembu was constantly on his cell phone during these incidents, insisting he was instructed by the spirit of his grandfather who is a sangoma.

Distraught female students said they were still grappling to come to terms with the attacks and hoped the law would take its course.

The matter was remanded to 13 November, for the magistrate’s decision on whether to allow the new evidence during the trial.

AN alleged serial rapist who stalked female students on the University of Zululand (Unizulu) campus, is finally facing justice.

Twenty-six-year-old Sboniso Mthembu appeared in the eSikhaleni Regional Court on Monday facing three charges of rape and one attempted rape.

He is also accused of terrorising young women in the KwaDlangezwa area during 2012, luring his victims with the promise of dispelling their bad luck and offering them prospects of a new job.

Four students testified against the local deejay, identifying him as a man who promised them employment, but then viciously sexually assaulted them repeatedly while insisting he was removing ‘bad luck’ from them.

‘He came to my house and asked me if I wanted a job.

‘When I said yes, he then told me I have bad luck and he would remove it from me,’ one victim testified.

‘He took me to a house and applied some lime lotion on me. It made me weak.

‘ I couldn’t move or do anything, and then he sexually assaulted me time and time again.’

Mthembu had told her he was instructed by his ‘transferable’ (spirits), who is a sangoma.

According to the victims, they reported the matter to the university security, who then informed the police.

On Monday Mthembu denied these charges saying he did not know anything regarding these incidents.

The case was remanded to 16 September for further investigation.

  1. Do people that commit hideous crimes against humanity really think that they can escape the justice they deserve, by blaming mythical figures such as the Tokoloshe, or using excuses such as they were bewitched by a Sangoma or instructed to do something by a transferable spirit..? These people should be found guilty of perjury and receive an additional 5 year sentence.

  2. Look at what the unemployment state in SA is doing to women, out of desparation they fall for these traps. I hope juststice is done and let it be a lesson, you have to know when something is too good to be true
