Death trap on busy road

Zululanders are concerned with the worthiness of KZN roads taking into consideration the accidents of late.

WITH horrific road accidents making headlines in the past week, Felixton residents fear they too are exposed daily to a potential death trap.

A massive pothole near a blind bend in the link road from the R102 to the Mpact Paper Mill and Huletts Sugar Mill, poses a huge danger to pedestrians and vehicles – and especially to the large trucks that use the route.

The pothole is about two metres wide and 2.5m long, big enough to cause a major accident or severe damage and injury, especially for those unfamiliar with the busy road, which has no verges.

Neil Hunt, Technical Manager of Mpact has gone to great lengths to get the Department of Transport to attend to the hole.

‘In July, a task team was sent out to mend the pothole and all they did was fill it with soil, which washed out three days later,’ said Hunt.

After countless attempts to contact the Department for comment, an SMS was received from official Melusi Thabede: ‘It is in agreement that the Felixton road needs serious attention and not just touch-ups.

‘The only issue here is that we are waiting for the processing of a tender for labour and

equipment.

‘Unfortunately I have exhausted all my short cut means to fix the road and I now have to do it properly.’
