Major improvements for Ngwelezana Hospital

Ngwelezana Hospital expecting new surgical ward by 2017.

FACED with several constraints, mainly space and specialist shortages, Ngwelezana Hospital is undergoing expansions to alleviate some of the congestion.

The regional and tertiary hospital which caters for the uThungulu, uMkhanyakude and Zululand districts totalling almost three million people, currently has 440 usable beds, five theatres and eight Intensive Care Unit beds.

‘We are running out of space and have had meetings with management to discuss the possible transfer of level one patients to eShowe Hospital.’ said CEO Dr Thandeka Khanyile.

‘This hospital was built in 1815 for TB patients. Over the years additional services have been added and thus renovations and refurbishments can only be done gradually,’ Khanyile said.

To supplement recently completed upgrades of the corridors, water and electrical systems, mortuary, college laboratory and a new medical ward, the hospital is at present building a state-of-the-art three-storey surgical ward expected to be completed by January 2017.

‘The institution does not have money and resources in abundance, but it can boast exceptional quality and skilled health care services.

‘We are working towards a transformation and request the community to alert us to any complaints as we review them on a daily basis.’ Dr Khanyile said.
