Power outages hit suburbs

Richards Bay residents hit by severe power outages this week, which were caused by faults at power substations

SEVERAL streets in Brackenham and Aquadene in Richards Bay experienced power outages this week, leaving some residents without electricity for most of Tuesday.

City of uMhlathuze Municipality spokesperson Vukile Mathabela said the power outages were the result of a problem with a transformer which supplies electricity to 14 substations.

He said electricity had been restored to the area and technicians were still dealing with the cause of the problem.

A resident of Frondosa Street in Brackenham, Bonnet MacDonald, said there have been numerous outages in recent weeks, with Tuesday’s blackout being the most severe and having lasted the whole day.

She said there were similar reports in Blacktree Tail Street where supply was disrupted for more than six hours.

Meanwhile, the power outage which affected households and businesses in Richards Bay and eSikhawini at lunchtime on Sunday was caused by a fault at the Polaris and Impala substations. Electricity was restored within an hour.

Electricity supply in eSikhawini’s Ncome and Lwandle streets will be interrupted today (Thursday) between 8am to 4pm to enable the municipality to extend the circuit.

On Saturday a power outage will take place at Vulindlela from 8am to 2pm to install new equipment at the University of Zululand.
